One thing I’m having a hell of a time with is giving up caffeine. I shouldn’t really drink it. It irritates my already over-irritable stomach and makes me more prone to puking, particularly the black coffee that I love so.

However, I am HOOKED. I normally drink at least a pot of coffee in the morning and about five or six Diet Cokes in the afternoon. I NEED my caffeine, people. It courses lovingly through my veins and makes me happy.

Did you quit caffeine, ever? How did you do it? I am finding it hard to give the stuff up without chewing the drapes and/or napping frequently. I am already pretty damned short on energy, and without caffeine I am like the slothiest of sloths.

Suggestions welcome in this dry land. I am already drinking a lot of water, as the doc suggested. I probably drink about six or seven sixteen-ounce bottles a day.

Happy Wednesday.

How does your doc feel about some extra vitamin B? I use a vitamin supplement called Berocca (bought online, since it’s prescription here, and otc everwhere else in the world). It’s a fizzy tablet you mix in water, just one/day. Limited, if any, caffeine in it, but all the vitamin B in it really perks me up. Since it is prescription though, you ought to check for interaction with the stuff your doc has you on.

I could always use more vitamins. I will have to talk to the doctor and see what he says!

Nope. Can’t give up caffeine. Not won’t: can’t.

My wife and I have colesterol issues and have given up:

    *Red Meat
*Booze (conflicts with her colesterol medication)
    *Sugar
*Pretty much anything that tastes good (unless you think that lentils taste good–then God bless you)

Fotunately, we do not have to give up black coffee, because, if we did, well, no one lives forever…

  • Trance says:

I just had to give up red meat, too, plus all booze save the occasional beer. Plus anything crunchy or filling. It blows, man.

I gave up caffine because of pain and heartburn. I gave up many things until I found out I was allergic to wheat. Now I occasionaly drink lattes, but misssssss bread. Not the heartburn and hives, but bread.

But I digress…I went cold turkey. It was the only way. I had a freaking headache but was able to get rid of that with a good night rest and drugs. It was worth it though.

Also you should ask your doc about glutamine. Its an otc supplement that is fantastic for your intestines. Just ask my sis in law with ulcer clotitis.

try caffeine-free diet coke. it’s in a gold can. tastes like ass and puss, but it’s in a can. it tastes like flat diet coke.

in fact, c-free diet coke is so nasty, i gave up all soda and stick with water. i get the “great value” w@lm@rt brand crystal light-like substance. i bought a bunch of boxes of the little tubes that make a single bottle and keep them in a clear plastic index card box in the cabinet (cuz i wanted a lot of flavors and all those boxes are a PITA!). you get 10 for around $2. if you don’t like the diet stuff, kool-aid makes them also.

i don’t drink coffee (except for the drinks that taste like you melted a candy bar in a cup and added a spoonful of coffee) so that wasn’t a problem.

i also love celestial seasonings “sugar cookie sleigh ride” tea, it tastes like a vanilla cake batter sno-cone. i bought all the boxes i could find on clearance for $1 each. however, i am SOL until next christmas since it’s a seasonal flavor!

  • Trance says:

I love that Sugar Cookie tea as well!!! That is some good shit.

i switched to tea when preggers. teavana has some awesome flavors that are low or no caffeine, i suggest mate vana and anything chocolate flavored.

I quit caffeine a few years ago when I started to have palpitations. The key for me was slowly cutting back, then switching to half decaf half coffee, then just decaf. It took about a month. Flavorful tea is a good substitute too. Peppermint tea has a natural boosting effect and no caffeine.

I can’t quit coffee, if I miss my morning coffee one of my eyes feels like it will explode.

Mmmmmmm Caffeine…Drug of choice for the office set or for us ‘Shut-in’s’. Coffee or caffeinated sodas have become a part of our daily lives to help stave off napping 3 times a day to avoid boredom. Tis true !
I don’t suppose taking one (1) No-Doze in the morning to rev up your metabolism would be allowed in your case, would it? Or perhaps your doctor can prescribe something to help keep your mind and body a bit more alert along the lines of a couple of cups of coffee in pill form…? Ya know what I’m tawkin’ here sweetie?
As for me, now that I am finally on state provided health care ( YAY !!!) I am able to give myself a Testosterone injection every 2 weeks since my body no longer makes it on it’s own. My god what a difference it has made in my daily living. Amazing stuff. I feel terrific, have the energy of a 20-something man and just all around feel like life is worth living again. Women also need Testosterone to help maintain muscle and for added energy as well I would imagine. Have a chat with Herr Doktor and see if he can give you some relief for this lack of energy. If your Doc is worth a damn he will run some basic blood work and go from there.
Not having any energy to do everyday things that most take for granted just sucks. I wish you nothing but the best sweetie, and hope that you can get all of this physical bullshit put to bed once and for all. You and your son deserve the best that life has to offer.

As Admiral Spruance of the U S Navy used to say, if your doctor says quit smoking, quit smoking, but if your doctor says quit drinking coffee, get a new doctor.

  • Trance says:

LOL, John, I haven’t thought of No-Doze since I was eating it by the fistful in college! I think my doctor would probably frown upon it, but I will ask him if there’s anything he can think of that might work. Love you man, and hope you are doing well.

OrneryPest, you just might be right.

Oh man, I just last week went cold turkey because I stopped drinking coffee for Lent. It was so much worse than I expected and I was only drinking half a pot of coffee a day and no Coca-Cola, which is nothing compared to you. So I don’t recommend cold turkey FOR SURE, in the unlikely event you were considering it!

Obviously too late to help me, I discovered lots of people recommend cutting down gradually, alternating a cup of normal with a cup of decaf coffee and so on until you ween yourself off it completely.

On the bright side after the misery, my stomach is MUCH happier. Good luck.
